History and Precedents
Humans have been creating and using symbols for a very long time to communicate ideas and concepts to other human beings. Brands are almost always visually represented through the the use of logos and symbols. Collect a symbol from each of the sites below, embed it in your HTML document and provide some information along with the symbol so you can discuss it in class.
- Symbols.com - Use the word or graphics search here to find a symbol.
- State Flags - pick any state (except California). Copy its flag to your desktop and be prepared to explain the meaning and history of the symbols that make up the flag.
What's this all got to do with branding? How are the symbols you collected related to our modern idea of branding? Write down a few sentences explaining your answer.

The Business of Branding
There are all sorts of companies doing business in "branding" and "identity design". Review each of the websites below. What kind of work do these companies do? How are they similar? How are they different? Write down your answers in your HTML document to share in class.

Social Branding
Social Branding is the name given to a new internet-based, social media form of branding. For this part of your response, add t the following to your HTML document:
- 3 differences between users of Twitter and users of Facebook
- The type of content users prefer to receive from their favorite brands
- The top ways in which users prefer to receive information from their favorite brands
- 5 things you can do to improve your personal brand

Website Identity Design
Explore two of the websites listed below. Create a new HTML document.Save the file as "firstinitialLastname_company". Put your name at the top of the page. For each of the organizations you reviewed, answer the following questions.
1. What are the key visual elements of the company/organization's brand?
2. What words would you use to describe the company's business personality or brand?
Not all branding is done by corporations. Take a look at the Amnesty International website. What does the organization do? In what way does their website promote their branding and identity?
Now check out this company's website. Does this company have any branding? Explain.
