Course Description

An introduction to the basic Principles, Systems, and Structures of Digital Layout, this course covers Layout Techniques for communicating information visually, in both print and digital media, as well as systems for creating Client-oriented Design Compositions with Technical Specifications.

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Apply Fundamental Design Principles to create Effective Visual Communications
  • Understand Basic Principles of Interactive Design Layout and Navigation Systems
  • Understand and apply principles of Grid Structures and Visual Systems to digital layouts
  • Create Comps & Design a Series of Pages: Plan and Convey Design Concepts
  • Analyze and Develop Work According to Client Specifications
  • Use problem-solving strategies to complete the creative process from Concept Development through Revisions to Final Output.

Photoshop Typography Exercise

Get the "typography.psd" file from your instructor's outbox. Place it on your scratch drive.

Re-arrange and edit the formatting of the text to create a visual hierarchy

Use Photoshop's character and paragraph tools to adjust leading, tracking and kerning and alignment

You can change font types, sizes, and style but you can't change the text color.

Download the source files for the Rainbow Ranch. Now create a Photoshop design of the Rainbow Ranch homepage using the resources provided.

  • Decide the standard browser size you will use
  • Decide which browser safe area you will use
  • Include all text
  • Include at least two of the provided photographs
  • Crop and resize photos as necessary

Use the "Save for Web.." command to save the exercise as a .jpg file when you have finished.
